While the full moon is actually tomorrow, the lighting and reflections over Lake Superior and the Duluth-Superior Harbor were fantastic tonight.

Blue Moon through the Duluth North Pier Lighthouse!

Tonight's moon is called a blue moon because it is the second full moon occurring in one month — the first was on July 2. The occurrence happens about every 30 months, or so.

It's always a delight to stand on the shoreline and photograph a full moon rise over Lake Superior, especially when my wife of 40+ years is along with.

When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained.......Psalms 8:3

Perigee/Supermoon

The 2013 supermoon was a remarkable sight last evening as it came floating out of the Lake Superior horizon. It was the largest supermoon this year.

The moonrise got plenty of attention from Lakewalk spectators as it broke into the clear shortly after topping the North Pier lighthouse.

Also known as a perigee moon, the event occurs when a full moon lines up with the Earth and the sun at a specific point in its orbit, called the lunar perigee. That's the point at which the moon is nearest to Earth as it traces its elliptical path around our planet.

Since it's closer to us, the moon appears up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than usual. Coined by astrologer Richard Nolle, the term "supermoon" essentially means a bigger and brighter full moon.

Duluth Harbor Boat Traffic for Monday 12/31/2012

Happy "Nautical" New Year!
Thank you for watching the Duluth Harbor Traffic in 2012 and looking forward to 2013. With two weeks left in this shipping season, there should be some great scenery to end the season.
The  big event of 2013 will be the Tall Ship Festival in July --- Always something to watch.

I hope to keep upgrading and improving the cameras in 2012 in order to provide the view in town.

Lighthouses, Waves, and a Full Moon

The sound of breaking waves, twilight in the sky, and a harvest moon made for a particularly beautiful evening on the shores of Lake Superior tonight.

The moon rose from the horizon at its appointed time just as the final light of day faded into the big lake.

August Full Moon - Full Sturgeon Moon

Full moon names date back to Native Americans, of what is now the northern and eastern United States. The tribes kept track of the seasons by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. Their names were applied to the entire month in which each occurred. There was some variation in the moon names, but in general, the same ones were current throughout the Algonquin tribes from New England to Lake Superior.

This August, there will be a second full moon on August 31st. This is rare, thus the name for the second full moon of the month - Blue Moon. So, the term "Once in a Blue Moon" is actually an accurate statement.

This photo was taken from the Lakewalk at 8:35PM last evening as the moon drifted behind the North Pier Lighthouse.

July Full Moon - Full Buck Moon

The Full Buck Moon – July is normally the month when the new antlers of buck deer push out of their foreheads in coatings of velvety fur. It was also often called the Full Thunder Moon, for the reason that thunderstorms are most frequent during this time. Another name for this month’s Moon was the Full Hay Moon.
The July full moon drifted up through the Lake Superior horizon on a rare 85 degree F evening in Duluth.
Canal Park was still crowded with people as the moon broke through the haze for a wonderful lunar display of God's creation.
